SharePoint : Site Definition
Site Definitions provide the lowest-level blueprint for creating SharePoint Product and Technologies sites. A site definition orchestrates the creation of a site only; therefore changing a site definition will not alter sites that have already been provisioned from the site definition. Site templates are based on site definitions.
